DRAWING NEAR TO THE HOLY CITY [Day 10]

JAN 23, 2012 / 0 COMMENTS / KARI / BACK TO ALL POSTS

Our tour is drawing to an end as we near the Holy City of Jerusalem. On our drive from the Galilee region to Jerusalem we made three stops. Our first stop was Mt. Carmel where Elijah demonstrated the superiority of the God of Israel over the prophets of Baal. At the top of this mountain overlooking the Megiddo Valley we read 1Kings 18. What a privilege to read an amazing story about a man of God "with a nature like ours" (James 5:17).

The next spectacular stop was a Roman city built by Herod, Caesarea [by the Sea]. It was built completely of white marble and one can still find huge chunks of marble on the shore. The magnificent Roman theater has been reconstructed and is in use for summer concerts and entertainment. Herod chose Mediterranean Sea as a natural backdrop for his theater.

Understanding Israel requires a basic knowledge of the Jewish history. The Diaspora Museum in Tel Aviv details the past and ongoing story of the Jewish people. Due to time constraints we visited this museum late in our tour. However, I would suggest making the museum one of your first stops in order to gain perspective and understanding for the historical sites you will visit.
